Wu Changshuo creó un estilo distintivo que fusionó el enfoque epigráfico clásico de la pintura con el estilo popular de Ren Yi (1840-1895) y continuó el ideal literati de unir poesía, caligrafía y pintura en una sola obra de arte. La imagen de Wu de un estudioso sentado junto a un qin (zither) saborear té recién elaborado celebra los ideales literati atemporales de refinamiento, retiro y autocultivación. Wu escogió un tema tradicional y una pincelada caligráfica contundente cuando muchos artistas se dirigían a Occidente por materia y estilo, reflejando su creencia en la tradición china como un recurso duradero para el artista moderno. El poema de Wu lee:Mirando el agua de primavera, sentado al lado del borde pedregoso del lago, los pinos antiguos se asemejan a los sabios antiguos,Un qin miente por un hombre del pasado.
