Xiang Shengmo nació en Xiushui (ahora Jaxing), provincia de Zhajiang, también conocido por su nombre de cortesía Kongzhang y nombres literarios Yian, Xushanqiao, y Songtaosanxian. Era el nieto de Xiang Yuanbian, un famoso coleccionista en la dinastía de Ming. Xiang Shengmo se destaca en la pintura paisajística. Primero imitaba las pinturas de Wen Zhengming y luego se trasladó a los estilos de los períodos de Song y Yuan. También se especializó en la pintura de flores donde le gustaba emplear colores brillantes y un estilo refrescante. Era igualmente bueno pintando pinos, y los pinos que pintó eran famosos como “los pinos de Xiang” (xiangsong).
