Este fue el retrato que más le gustaba a Xu Beihong. Chen Sanli (1853-1937), nombre de cortesía Boyan y bolígrafo Sanyuan, era de Yining, Jiangxi. Pasó sus últimos años en Beiping. Era una figura clave en la Escuela Tongguang, y fue considerado el último poeta tradicional de China. Durante la ocupación japonesa de Beiping, murió de hambre. Esta pintura colgó en el salón de Chen. Su padre, Chen Baozhen, era una figura importante en la Reforma de los Cientos Días. Los hijos de Chen Sanli, Chen Yinke y Chen Hengke (Chen Shizeng), fueron historiadores y pintores respectivamente. Chen Sanli, Tan Sitong, Ding Huikang, y Wu Baochu fueron llamados colectivamente los Cuatro Hijos de la Reforma de los Cientos Días, pero después de la Reforma de los Cientos Días, Chen raramente se involucró en la política, llamándose “un observador no identificado. ”
