Se dice que el emperador Yuan Renzong (r. 1312–20) ha señalado que nadie podría comparar con Zhao Mengfu, que poseía siete cualidades excepcionales: Ancestro real canto, apariencia elegante, amplio aprendizaje, carácter puro y conducta justa, realización literaria, habilidad en caligrafía y pintura, y conocimiento profundo de las enseñanzas budistas y daoístas. Como caligrafía líder, Zhao defendió el regreso a modelos antiguos, integrando con éxito estilos de las dinastías Jin (265-420) y Tang (618-907) para crear una nueva síntesis tanto en scripts regulares como cursivos. Durante el siglo XIV, las tipografías de libros impresos fueron modeladas después de su guión regular, mientras que su guion cursivo, visto aquí, formó la base para muchos escritores posteriores" estilos de escritura informal. Cuatro anécdotas de la Vida de Wang Xizhi testifica la devoción de Zhao a la "Sage of Calligraphy", Wang Xizhi (303–361).
