Se cree que Courbet ha pintado este exuberante paisaje en Fontcouverte, en la región de Saintonge del oeste de Francia. En el verano de 1862 dibujaba allí junto a Louis-Augustin Auguin (1824-1904), su probable primer propietario. El lienzo puede haber sido incluido en una exposición que Courbet y Auguin ayudaron a organizar en Saintes a principios de 1863. Otra vista de Fontcouverte fue exhibida como una colaboración entre los artistas (donde se desconocen).
