Esta escena del Antiguo Testamento muestra un ángel en el cielo abrazándose fuego y azufre sobre Sodoma, para destruir la ciudad por su maldad. A la izquierda, otro ángel lleva a Lot y sus dos hijas a la seguridad. Detrás de ellos, la esposa de Lot, que se arrepintió a pesar de una advertencia, se ha convertido en un pilar de sal. Años después de que Corot exhibiera la pintura en el Salón de París de 1844, la cortó sustancialmente, reduciendo el cielo y el paisaje a la derecha. Él repintió el primer plano en una paleta más oscura y exhibió el lienzo revisado en el Salón 1857. Para entonces su estatura aseguró una mejor recepción de los críticos.
