Rembrandt tenía un gran estudio con muchos alumnos que emulaban su estilo e incluso su firma. Como resultado, continúa hoy un intenso debate sobre la autoría de sus pinturas. Esta obra fue atribuida universalmente a Rembrandt hasta que los eruditos la “demotaron” en 1982, argumentando que la representación del espacio, la textura y la anatomía sugiere una hábil imitación de un artista desconocido. En ausencia de documentación o pruebas concluyentes del análisis técnico, continúa el debate.
