Un importante pintor de temas militares, Pils ejecutó este boceto compositivo en relación con una pintura de casi cincuenta pies de longitud, conmemorando una visita de 1860 de Napoleón III a Argelia, que había sido conquistada por Francia en 1830. El gran lienzo fue encargado para Versalles pero su destino es desconocido; puede haber sido destruido en 1871, durante la insurrección conocida como la Comuna de París.
