The romantic painter Brugada and was politically active during the three-year liberal government. Following the return of King Fernando VII in 1823, he was forced to go into exile in France where he continued the fight against absolutism. He spent eleven years in Bordeaux, where he befriended Goya, and even after his return to Madrid following the king’s death, he continued to visit the French city regularly. He completed a number of commissions on his journeys and painted landscapes of the places he passed through along the road. This picture shows a view of Ziboure from the harbour at Saint-Jean-de-Luz, with the Maison de l’Infante in the foreground. It contains some typical features from Brugada’s landscape work; the various elements are built up through meticulous drawing and brought to life in delicate golden shades.Mikel Lertxundi GalianaInventory number: GFA-006000-001
