Dorothea Rockburne came to prominence in the late 1960s with Minimalist- inflected works pitched somewhere between paintings and sculpture employing raw materials such as sheet metal, chipboard, and crude oil. In a recent interview, Rockburne (American, born Canada, 1932) described her art- making in this way:
