The painting is a smaller version of the monumental Portrait of my wife. The painter Anna Ancher (The Hirschsprung Collection). While the larger version was sold, the family kept this version for themselves. Michael Ancher has painted his wife while pregnant standing in the doorway of their first home, the Garden House, which today is in the garden of Skagens Museum.
