The Blue Room, also known as La chambre bleue, is a 1923 painting by French artist Suzanne Valadon. This masterpiece has been recognized as a radical subversion of representation of women in art. It is one of her most recognizable works and highlights the modern 20th-century woman, clothed in pajamas with a cigarette in her mouth.
Like many of Valadon's later works, The Blue Room uses strong colors and emphasizes decorative backgrounds and patterned materials. The painting features a full-figured, voluptuous woman displayed inclined on a bed surrounded by blue sheets with floral patterns. Two closed books are placed to the side, while her eyes face away from the viewer as if lost in thought.
