During a trip to Liverpool, in 1903, Victor Tardieu (1870-1937) painted several works depicting the port. Here, he depicts men loaded with hauls from the boats at dawn.In the foreground, four men use ropes to haul a load, which is out of frame. Two of them look at us, which gives the effect of including the audience in the scene. The red hues of their skin are part of a generally warm atmosphere. The other silhouettes are quickly brushed, or are miniscule marks, juxtaposed with the liners. The liners lead the eye to the background, towards the city which is covered with mist.Tardieu travelled in Europe for two years, using a grant won at the 1902 Salon. His laureate piece, Le Travail (The Labor), showed his interest in the manual worker, which he continued to represent in ports across Italy and England.
