Date and Location

Van Gogh created this painting in October 1888 while he was living in Arles, France.

History

Vincent van Gogh painted three almost identical paintings on the theme of his bedroom. The first version, now in the Van Gogh Museum (Amsterdam, Netherlands), was executed in October 1888 and was damaged in a flood that occurred while the artist was in hospital in Arles. Almost a year later, Van Gogh made two copies of it: one, the same size, is now in the Art Institute in Chicago; the other, in the Musée d'Orsay, made for his family in Holland, is smaller.

Significance

In a letter to his brother Theo, Vincent explained what prompted him to paint this series of works: "I am absently painting my bedroom with its blue doors and the yellow furniture." He wanted to create a sense of rest and repose in these paintings. The bold use of color, expressive line, and thick application of paint in 'Van Gogh's Bedroom in Arles (First Version)' have inspired avant-garde artistic groups like the Fauves and German Expressionists in the early 20th century.
