Cet autoportrait récemment redécouvert par Adriaen Hanneman peint non pas sur la toile habituelle, mais sur panneau est la dernière œuvre datée de ce portraitiste de La Haye. En 1669, quand il peint cet autoportrait, Hanneman, 65 ans, se marie pour la troisième fois. Cet événement peut avoir fourni l'impulsion directe pour la création de cette œuvre virtuose.
