Albert Bierstadt fit six voyages distincts à l'Ouest depuis son atelier de New York entre 1859 et 1870, produisant des croquis qui produiraient les peintures à l'huile des Rocheuses pour lesquelles il est le plus connu, ainsi que cette vision pastorale d'un paysage résolument plat. Ses vues fournissaient aux publics de l'Est des visions d'un Occident idéalisé, rempli de vues magnifiques et de ressources inépuisables.
