Lincoln siégea pour ce portrait et quatre autres dans le studio Alexander Gardner, le 8 novembre 1863. La semaine suivante, le président s'est rendu en Pennsylvanie pour consacrer un nouveau cimetière aux soldats de l'Union tués lors de la bataille de Gettysburg. Gardner a suivi et était dans le public avec sa caméra quand Lincoln a livré l'adresse de Gettysburg. 98.32.310
