Peintre à succès et populaire de retables, Bergognone a travaillé pour de grandes églises dans toute la Lombardie, y compris l'Incoronata à Lodi et la Certosa de Pavia. Cette image, qui date du début du XVIe siècle, a formé le panneau central d'un grand polyptyque. Sa délicatesse est typique de son travail. Les étoiles de métal sur la robe de la Vierge sont probablement des ajouts plus tard.
