Ambrogio da Fossano, connu sous le nom de Bergognone, a étudié en Lombardie dans les années 1490, dans un contexte culturel marqué par Vincenzo Foppa et par des modèles flamands, très populaires dans la cour de Sforza. Du flamand, Bergognone a appris l'attention au détail, vu dans les touches de lumière qui révèlent les matériaux et dans la technique picturale raffinée, basé sur le contraste entre les pigments translucides, par exemple entre la laque rouge des tuniques des deux anges et la peinture émaillée des tons de chair.
