On ne sait pas pour quelle église ce retable a été fait. Comme il est sur toile il aurait pu facilement être envoyé de Mantoue, où Mantegna était artiste de cour, à une église ailleurs, et est en fait d'abord enregistré à Milan. Le rouleau du Baptiste, autour de sa croix, est inscrit avec le texte latin familier, partiellement visible,
