Kauffmann est née en Suisse mais a fait sa réputation en Italie et en Angleterre, où elle a été membre fondateur de la Royal Academy. Ces tableaux ont été exécutés à Rome pour Monseigneur Onorato Caetani, qui la même année a fait peindre son portrait par Kauffmann. Plus tard, les portraits d'Anton Raphael Mengs et de Pompéo Batoni témoignent du caractère international des cercles intellectuels romains du XVIIIe siècle. Kauffmann était parmi les peintres d'histoire les plus recherchés d'Europe. Ces compositions sont basées sur François Fénelon, Les Aventures de Telemachus (1699), dans lequel le fils du héros grec Odyssée se lave sur les rives d'une île habitée par Calypso et ses nymphes.
