Il était courant pour un artiste prospère comme Van Dyck d'employer un certain nombre d'assistants de studio. Il avait lui-même commencé sa carrière d'assistant dans le studio de Rubens, puis a créé ses propres ateliers à Anvers et Blackfriars. Charity n'est qu'une des nombreuses copies de studio peintes après l'original de Van Dyck dans la National Gallery de Londres. Il reflète une forte influence italienne, suggérant que l'original a été créé peu après le retour de Van Dyck. L'implication d'un élève moins expérimenté est particulièrement évidente dans l'application de la couleur, qui est moins subtile que l'original.
