Un champ d'arbres d'hiver étoilés borde un canal et un sentier paysan rouillé, en face d'un champ qui se trouve en jachère pour la saison. Les arbres semblent plantés délibérément pour les matériaux de construction ou le carburant, puisque deux sont abattus à gauche. Gorter souligne la subtilité du paysage hivernal hollandais, avec des tonales vertes, des gris et des bruns sous les nuages gris percés par le ciel bleu au-delà. Arrivé à Amsterdam en jeune âge, Arnold Marc Gorter a étudié le dessin à la ville.
