Le grand théologien dominicain saint Thomas Aquin (1225-1274) est montré deux fois : consulter un livre, et assis entre les saints Pierre et Paul, qui apparut miraculeusement pour l'aider à interpréter des textes sacrés. Le récit est mentionné dans la première biographie d'Aquinas, écrite par William of Tocco, un précédent dominicain qui a participé à l'effort de promouvoir sa canonisation. Le panneau appartient à un retable peint pour une chapelle dans l'église de San Domenico à Modène. Bartolomeo degli Erri et son frère Agnolo ont été les personnalités artistiques clés à Modène pendant la seconde moitié du XVe siècle et ont peint trois retables pour l'église de San Domenico.
