Bernard Molitor est né à Luxembourg. Il connut une brillante carrière d'ébéniste à Paris, où il s'installa en 1778. Depuis la fin du règne de Louis XVI jusqu'à la Restauration, il acquiert une réputation fondée sur sa préférence pour les belles acajous, ce qui donne un grand sentiment d'unité à son travail. Ces grandes tables à thé avec plateau en marbre tournant étaient l'une de ses spécialités ; elles étaient conçues pour se tenir au milieu d'un salon.
