Le sujet de la peinture est tiré du livre apocryphe de Tobit, qui raconte comment l'archange Raphael a ordonné à Tobias de guérir sa cécité de père avec la galle du poisson qu'il avait pris. Bien que né à Gênes, en 1630 Bernardo Strozzi a déménagé à Venise, où cette toile a été peinte. Il a répété la composition au moins deux fois, suggérant qu'elle a connu un certain succès. Le travail de Strozzi est caractérisé par un pinceau vibrant distinctif et une attention aux détails de la vie morte.
