Les peintures de Liljefors donnent souvent l'impression d'un événement dramatique éclairé par la foudre. Les gais ont senti le danger. L'un a déjà pris le vol tandis que l'autre ouvre son bec court et rond pour faire son dur avertissement. Liljefors étudie et dessine des oiseaux vivants, mais il utilise aussi des photographies et des oiseaux farcis – qu'il monte à l'extérieur dans un cadre naturel. La composition avec la branche au premier plan et la lisière de forêt floue au fond renforcent le sentiment que c'est un moment gelé.
