Il a été achevé en 1599-1600 pour la chapelle contarelli dans l'église de la congrégation française , san luigi dei francesi à rome , où il reste aujourd'hui . il est accroché aux côtés de deux autres peintures de matthieu par caravage , le martyre de saint matthieu ( peint en même temps que l'appel ) et l'inspiration de saint matthieu ( 1602 )
