Le théologien protestant Karl Reinthaler, qui fonda le Martinsstift à Erfurt en 1821, voulait promouvoir une vie de famille harmonieuse. Le Stift était situé dans l'ancien monastère augustinien où Martin Luther avait vécu et était utilisé pour élever les enfants pauvres. Pendant la période de Noël, les familles devraient lire à partir de la collection de conversations et de chansons sous l'arbre de Noël et chanter ensemble.
