Étudiant de Francesco Albani, Cignani conserva la ligne du classiciste bolognese et la palette lumineuse, et les influa sur l'aspect délicat et humain qui se dégageait facilement dans cette représentation de la Charité. Peut-être parce que le sujet était si bien adapté à Cignani, cette composition est connue en plusieurs versions, dont cet exemple, le seul connu sur le cuivre, est parmi ses plus accomplis.
