Carolus-Duran était au sommet de son succès en tant que portraitiste de société quand il a peint cette ressemblance de l'épouse du banquier américain à Paris en 1890. La pose et le costume, avec leurs fortes suggestions du XVIIe siècle, reflètent le début de l'artiste et l'admiration pour Velázquez.
