La ferme que Julian Alden Weir a acquise près de Branchville, au Connecticut, en 1882, s'est avérée bien plus qu'un endroit où vivre. Il eut une influence bien plus profonde, devenant un havre qui inspira son travail de peintre, à tel point que l'artiste américain Frank Duveneck remarqua que c'était en fait la ferme qui fit de Weir un peintre paysagiste.
