Chenxian était un peintre chinois, qu'on pense être le représentant des premiers peintres autour d'Obaku-shu, une secte religieuse de Zen au milieu du 17ème siècle. Il n'a pas visité le Japon pendant sa vie, mais beaucoup de ses œuvres ont été apportées par des moines chinois qui sont allés au Japon. Le style fort et inhabituel de la peinture à l'encre de Chenxian a donné de graves impacts aux peintres japonais à Nagasaki. Cette peinture avait été héritée dans le temple Seifukuji établi en 1677.
