Biographie de l'artiste :Le colonel John W. Thomason, USMC, était capitaine pendant la Première Guerre mondiale. En tant qu'artiste, il a utilisé ses compétences pour peindre des exemples représentatifs de soldats allemands portant trois types d'équipement de tête. Ces créations tempéra et ink-on-paper ont servi deux buts. D'abord, il avait des cibles à tirer et, ensuite, il reconnaîtrait plus facilement l'ennemi. Les œuvres sont marquées par des trous de lui Modèle 1911 .45 calibre pistolet.
