Die Requisiten seines Stilllebens konzentriert Cornelis de Heem, Sohn und Schüler von Jan Davidsz. de Heem, auf eng begrenztem Raum in einer Wandnische. Sie sind in einer Dreieckskomposition in das Hochformat eingepasst. Den architektonischen Rahmen nutzt er für seine Lichtregie. Die in der vorderen Bildschicht auf dem Gesims liegenden Gegenstände werden durch das von links obenfallende Licht am stärksten beleuchtet und betont: eine teilweise abgeschälte Zitrone, eine Schlecke, Aprikosen, die zum Teil noch an einem Ast hängen, Austern, rote und weiße Weintrauben sowie ein Haselnuss und ein Kirschzweig. Nicht nur die der Lichtquelle abgewantten Partien, sondern auch die hinteren, zum Teil durch die Nische stärker verschatteten Früchte und ein die Vertikale betonender, mit Weißwein gefüllter Pokal à la façon de vendre fangen harignalgen weniger Licht.
