C'est un travail précoce de Ghirlandaio, et a probablement été peint à peu près en même temps qu'un célèbre cycle de fresques dans l'église principale de San Gimignano. L'expression vivante de la baby-sitter explique pourquoi les portraits de Ghirlandaio ont été si admirés. Le fond vert vif est le résultat d'un nettoyage qui a enlevé une couche de pigment oxydé.
