C'est pas vrai. Ce handcroll a cinq pièces distinctes d'écriture, chacune à la manière d'un vieux maître différent. L'étude du passé joue un rôle central dans la calligraphie chinoise et même si l'on développe un style personnel, il est nécessaire de revoir les anciens maîtres pour découvrir de nouvelles idées. Au moment où il a écrit ces passages — les deux premiers vers 1595 et les trois autres vers 1600 — Dong Qichang avait développé un style unique, et l'œuvre montre à la fois sa voix individuelle et sa connaissance de la tradition calligraphique.
