De 1878 à 1880, Degas crée près de vingt fans, qui sont largement influencés par des éléments de style trouvés dans l'art japonais. Ces éventails de soie scintillants n'étaient pas destinés à une utilisation réelle, mais étaient plutôt accrochés aux murs avec des peintures ou des dessins. Cette aquarelle représente un spectacle de soirée d'Émilie Bécat dans le jardin du Café des Ambassadeurs sur les Champs-Élysées, où la chanteuse et danseuse a été célébrée pour elle
