Charleston, originaire de Caroline du Sud, Edwin Augustus Harleston est diplômé du prestigieux Avery Normal Institute de Charleston et de l'Université d'Atlanta. À Atlanta, il étudie la sociologie sous la direction d'un éminent érudit, le Dr W.E.B. Du Bois, et en 1905, Harleston est accepté à l'Université Harvard pour poursuivre ses études en arts libéraux. Cependant, lorsqu'il est arrivé à Boston, il a changé d'avis et a plutôt choisi de fréquenter l'école d'art au Museum of Fine Arts de Boston. Après sept années d'études sous la direction d'artistes tels que Edmund C. Tarbell, Frank Benson, et Phillip Hale, Harleston est retourné à Charleston comme l'une des villes
