Shuvalov (1727-1797) avait été un paramour impérial, l'amant de l'impératrice Élisabeth II de Russie. L'un des plus grands intellectuels de Russie pendant les Lumières, il a promu le développement des arts et des sciences. Selon Vigée Le Brun, il a combiné les manières courtoises avec la politesse obligatoire, et comme il était un homme bon, il a été recherché par la meilleure société. Ce portrait sympathique a probablement été peint posthume.
