Née à Cincinnati, Elizabeth Nourse s'installe en France en 1887, où elle passe sa longue et prolifique carrière de peintre expatrié. En 1890, Nourse se rendit en Italie pour un séjour prolongé en visite de Grottaferrata, Tivoli, Venise, Florence et Rome. Cette aquarelle éthérée avec Saint Mark en arrière-plan montre Nourse travaillant hors des portes, pas seulement un peintre de studio de mères et d'enfants, l'œuvre pour laquelle elle est le plus connue.
