Washington à Monmouth est un contrepoint étoilé à la figure presque pensive du Grand Général montré dans "Washington Crossing the Delaware" L'ancien travail est Leutze travaillant dans le drame complet de l'École Romantique du XVIIIe siècle - Washington astride un coursier de charge qui a ses narines flanquées, éclairant l'aloft sabre, de la tête au jouet le plus grand que le héros de la vie. L'instant où Leutze a dramatisé sur cette toile était dans la légende la seule fois dans la vie de Washington quand il était assez en colère pour perdre son caractère et utiliser le langage maléfique en public.
