Martin Van Buren est venu à Albany en 1812 comme sénateur d'État. En 1816, il était procureur général et avait organisé une puissante machine politique qui l'avait aidé à devenir sénateur des États-Unis. Il fut gouverneur de l'État de New York en 1829, démissionnant pour devenir Andrew Jackson.
