À bien des égards, Fanny Churberg a été pionnière dans l'histoire de l'art finlandais. Elle était une artiste indépendante, ambitieuse et courageuse. En tant qu'étudiante à Düsseldorf, elle a été contrainte d'étudier en privé car l'Académie d'art n'acceptait pas les femmes. Le paysagiste allemand Carl Ludwig était son professeur en 1867 et 1871-1874. Elle a peint activement pendant dix ans, puis a continué à promouvoir l'artisanat. Alors que la peinture de paysage était plus proche de son cœur, elle a également développé un intérêt pour la peinture morte en étudiant à Paris en 1875-1876. Son travail dans ce genre est parmi les plus beaux de l'histoire de l'art finlandais.
