C'est l'un des trois portraits de femmes de Bol inscrit en 1642, la date la plus ancienne connue sur les peintures de lui. L'artiste de Dordrecht a étudié avec Rembrandt vers 1636–1641, puis est devenu l'un des portraitistes les plus réussis d'Amsterdam. Malgré l'exposition riche de dentelle et de bijoux dans cette image, son aspect le plus attrayant est le sens du personnage, comme dans les portraits de Rembrandt de la même époque.
