Cette peinture a été créée après la mort de Valentine Godé-Darel le 25 janvier 1915 à Vevey (voir son portrait de 1912, inv. 1133). Deux études de couleur (propriété privée; Ferdinand Hodler, exh. cat. Zurich/Berlin, Nationalgalerie/Paris, Musée du Petit Palais 1983, n° 176 f., color mals. p. 393 f.) sont considérées comme des étapes préliminaires. Dans sa théorie du parallélisme, Hodler associe l'horizontale à la mort, dans laquelle la grande unité toute vie revient.
