En minimisant les indicateurs de profondeur, Khnopff a transformé l'étagère qui soutient le vase en une bande abstraite de bleu sur fond cramoisi. L'éventail japonais et les couleurs rose pâle, crème et bleu indiquent l'admiration de l'artiste pour le style innovant de James McNeill Whistler (1834-1903). Le travail de Whistler était bien connu parmi l'avant-garde artistique en Belgique, ayant été montré avec la société d'exposition radicale Les XX à Bruxelles, que Khnopff a aidé à fonder.
