Lorsque le grand maître littéraire français Victor Hugo est décédé, le gouvernement a élaboré un plan pour établir une statue pour le commémorer dans le Panthéon (mausolée pour les grands), et ils ont chargé Rodin de produire cette œuvre (ultérieurement elle serait établie sur l'avenue Victor-Hugo dans le 16ème arrondissement de Paris). Rodin a regardé en arrière sur Hugo
