Salviati et Rimbotti, un médecin, appartenaient à la même académie littéraire ; c'est probablement un portrait informel fait pour son ami. La surface cristalline, même, provient des couches minces et transparentes de peinture construites sur le panneau de bois, qui est exceptionnellement bien conservé. Les inscriptions et les sceaux de cire de la famille Rimbotti, visibles à l'arrière du panneau, aident à retracer l'emplacement de la peinture pendant près de cinq cents ans.
