Giovanni Battista Birago (1738-1822), soldat de l'armée autrichienne, atteint le grade de major (et dans la peinture il porte son uniforme). Dans son testament, il établit son épouse Cristina Croce, prévoyant de nombreux legs pour l'Ospedale Maggiore. Il s'était marié pour respecter son frère.
